Throwback Thursday: Hunchback of Notre Dame – A Musical Adventure

Quasimodo

Always a gentleman, Quasimodo greets his fans at Disney-MGM Studios

For a little over 6 years, Disney-MGM Studios was home to Quasimodo and the band of characters from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. This show was tucked away in the Backlot Theater. This semi-open theater was entirely enclosed after the show ended and is now used as a storage and staging area. The Hunchback of Notre Dame – A Musical Adventure was a fantastic show that started with Matt the Juggler. Matt would come out and entertain the crowd by juggling, telling jokes and reciting stories. No two openings were ever exactly the same but it was always fun to watch. When the show would start the gypsies would flood the stage and the 40 foot catwalk that extended into the audience. The story unfolded much like the Disney animated movie – telling the story of Quasimodo and his struggles against the evil Frollo. But the finale of the show was a Disney worthy spectacle that left you gasping – whether it was the first time you saw the show or the 400th! Quasimodo comes swinging in to save Esmerelda and Frollo declares war on Notre Dame. The fight scene that ensued was nothing short of amazing with sword fights, falling logs, shooting sparks, fire, and so much more. While I enjoy all the shows at Hollywood Studios this one will always hold a special place in my heart. There was something about this show that made it a “can’t miss” for me. While I enjoy the shows that are currently running none of them have that “must see” appeal to me that the Hunchback always had. Disney has brought shows back in the past, maybe a little pixie dust and wishing and I can see this one again too. Until then, you can find large sections of it on you tube and relive the magic that rang out like “The Bells of Notre Dame”.

Jester from Hunchback of Notre Dame

Always sharp tongued but a loyal defender of his friends
