Magic Monday: Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of the highlight attractions of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Tucked in the far back corner of the Africa section of the park this 110 acre wildlife sanctuary allows visitors to get a glimpse at the animals native to different regions of Africa. You will board a large open-sided jeep that travels through the animal habitats allowing you to view the animals going about their normal routines. No two safaris are ever the same since it is all based on the animal activity. The ride through the wildlife preserve takes about 20 minutes – but can take longer depending on what the animals are doing. We have been stopped for 10 minutes as animals stopped in the road and to this day my daughter tells the story of how a giraffe tried to lick her when we were stopped. Although he wasn’t *that* close, he was close enough that she remembers the long black tongue! Since you are traveling over rough terrain, the ride can get a little bumpy, so use caution if you have medical issues. But they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so rather than reading about the safari – here are some photos. These photos are all from a single ride on the safari – no mixing up different rides so you can see different animals. I have some great pictures of hippos, but this particular morning – they were all hanging out at the bottom of the pool, so no hippos. Head to the safari early in the day – since the animals are usually just fed and awake and the temperatures are a little cooler inspiring a little more movement and activity!

  1. This is by far our favorite attraction in Animal Kingdom!! I love that we can all ride as a family (we do lots of rider swaps since we have a little one) and that it’s different every single time we ride it.

  2. I’ve always loved this attraction but we didn’t get to go the last time we went to Disney. Hopefully I’ll be back in January and can go then!

  3. I loved this one. We got there nice and early and there was a wonderful girl who told us to fast pass everest and head straight there all the animals were up.

  4. This is one of my favorite attractions to experience! Even though the ride is great every time, the tour guide can really make that much better and exciting!

  5. When we were there last month, we saw several rhinos running full speed about 30 feet away. It was SPECTACULAR.

  6. This is my favorite ride in the animal kingdom. We have rode it many times and many times the animals have gotten pretty close to our vehicle. It is a must do!!

  7. We will be taking our first trip to Animal Kingdom in the fall and I cannot wait for this ride! I just watched a kinda “behind the scenes” for Animal Kingdom and how they train the animals and more importantly, how they keep the animals close to the path of the safari jeeps. It was so interesting! We cannot wait!
