Throwback Thursday: Kitchen Kabaret
When you talk about the Land Pavilion in Epcot today, Soarin’ is usually the first thing people think about. But in 1982, when Epcot opened, there was no Soarin’. But even back then, the Land Pavilion had some exciting things inside. One of the attractions inside this pavilion was Kitchen Kabaret. This short audio-animatronic show ran from 1982 until 1994 when it was replaced by a similar style show called Food Rocks.
The host of Kitchen Kabaret was Bonnie Appetite. She takes you through several musical and theatrical numbers that tell you about the importance of healthy eating. Each number is a different style act – from a lounge-style crooner telling you all about dairy products to the Latin styling of Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit. Each act had its own cast of audio-animatronic food products that tell you about why they are important and how they help keep you healthy (each section of the food pyramid except fats got a turn). Then they all join back together for a grand Kabaret finale. This show only ran about 15 minutes but for a kid in Epcot in 1982, the Land Pavilion was nirvana – a ride AND a show with singing food! My how times have changed at Epcot but I will always look back fondly on the Fiesta Fruit singing Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit. And for fellow Kitchen Kabaret fans, be on the lookout at Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival – the Fiesta Fruit has been known to make merchandise appearances there from time to time!
